THE DETAILS

The Nigeria Labour Congress has declared support for the nationwide strike action by the Nigeria Union of Teachers and called for the immediate release of pupils, students and teachers abducted by kidnappers across the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its President, Joe Ajaero, the NLC described the strike as a necessary response to the worsening security situation facing teachers and schoolchildren.

According to the labour union, the action reflects the determination of teachers to protect themselves amid increasing attacks on educational institutions and personnel

The Congress further stated that the strike should also serve as a strong reminder to governments at all levels to address the growing insecurity confronting Nigerians.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced four members of the Al-Shabaab terrorist group to death by hanging for their involvement in the June 5, 2022 attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State.

Justice Emeka Nwite found the four defendants guilty after ruling that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that they were members of the terrorist group responsible for planning and carrying out the attack. The prosecution presented 11 witnesses and 23 exhibits, including confessional statements and digital forensic evidence.

While four defendants were convicted, the court discharged and acquitted the fifth defendant, Momoh Otuho Abubakar, after determining that the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence linking him directly to the terrorist attack.

The Ondo State Police Command has dismissed rumours circulating in parts of Akure and on social media claiming that bandits have invaded the state capital.

According to the police, intelligence gathering and security assessments conducted across Akure have not revealed any credible threat or evidence of bandit presence.

The Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, appealed to parents, guardians, students, and school authorities to remain calm and disregard unverified information. He assured residents that adequate security measures are in place to protect lives and property across the state.

The Command further warned against the deliberate spread of misinformation capable of causing fear and public disorder. It stated that anyone found responsible for circulating false reports intended to incite panic would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

A Iranian drone strike on a passenger terminal in Kuwait’s international airport killed one person and wounded 63 more on Wednesday, Kuwaiti officials said, as conflict escalated between Tehran and US forces in the Gulf

Kuwait’s military dubbed the attack on the airport an act of “criminal Iranian aggression”, while Iran’s Revolutionary Guards accused US forces of provoking the strikes by targeting a tanker and a communications tower on the country’s Qeshm Island.

Health ministry spokesman Abdullah al-Sanad said 25 ambulances were dispatched and that 63 people were treated for injuries “including head wounds, cerebral hemorrhages, amputations and injuries resulting from explosions.”

Kuwait further suspended air traffic after the attack and diverted arriving planes to other destinations, but later restarted Kuwait Airways flights.
