THE DETAILS
A major political upset has emerged from Plateau State following the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives primaries held nationwide on Saturday, as incumbent lawmaker Yusuf Gagdi failed to secure the party’s ticket for another term.
Gagdi, who represents Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, was defeated by John Tonshinen in the closely contested primary election.
The result was announced by the APC electoral committee led by Daspan Ishaya, who supervised the exercise across Pankshin, Kanke and Kanam Local Government Areas.
The declaration sparked jubilant celebrations among Tonshinen’s supporters, many of whom described the outcome as a defining moment in the political history of the constituency.
Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, on Sunday condemned the abduction of 87 students and teachers in Borno and Oyo states within 24 hours.
Bamidele, also Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, added that the recent abduction accentuated the need to expedite the establishment of state police currently under consideration at the National Assembly.
He made the remarks in a statement by his Directorate of Media and Public Affairs on Sunday, calling for concerted and strategic measures to make schools safe nationwide and tame the rising number of out-of-school children in crisis.
Bamidele condemned the abduction, describing it as an attack on the future of Nigeria, thereby promising to speed up the creation of state police to complement the country’s current national security architecture.
According to him, the 10th National Assembly is currently at the phase of concluding the process of amending the 1999 Constitution to pave the way for the establishment of state police. Indeed, the process will soon be completed at the National Assembly.
The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) said Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso did not join the party because they could not get guarantees about a presidential ticket.
PRP chairman Hakeem Baba-Ahmed said this on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, explaining that the former presidential candidates were also concerned about the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) delay in recognising the PRP national executive. “Well, they had issues about whether the party can guarantee that they emerge as presidential and vice presidential candidates. They had questions about whether we could guarantee that a huge number of places could be made available to them because they are coming in with a movement into our party,” he said on the current affairs show.
They also had issues with the fact that INEC deliberately refused to upload our new executive, me and my colleagues, for a long time. I think they were right there that it represented some worry that we had a problem with INEC. So they moved on.”

“What was supposed to be a moment of joy in the village turned into immense sorrow,” he said, speaking on condition of anonymity. A security source, who requested anonymity for safety reasons, confirmed the strikes. The tragedy occurred as the villagers were preparing the second edition of this traditional collective wedding, a major cultural event for this community,” he told AFP.
