Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has said that his priority was to have a capable candidate who can move the state forward succeed him.
Makinde, who stated this on Wednesday in Ibadan at the International Tourism Summit organised by the state government, said that party colour would not matter in the choice of his preferred successor.
The summit had its theme: “From Groundwork to Governance: Building Tourism That Endures,”
Responding to critics of his decision to pick Abimbola Adekanmbi, the Commissioner for Finance during the administration of the late Gov. Abiola Ajimobi, and a late entrance into his government in 2025, the governor said “what matters is competence, and provided the candidate is an indigene of the state.
My role is to recommend a preferred successor for the people of Oyo State. It is the electorate that will decide,” he said.
The governor assured people of the state that the winners of the 2027 election would not be determined by “federal might”.

Civil Society Organisations have raised concerns over what they described as growing tensions around judicial transparency, civic freedoms, and the handling of a defamation judgment reportedly obtained by officials of the Department of State Services against the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project.
In a joint press statement signed by 52 organisations, the groups said they were worried about the public discourse surrounding the judgment, particularly amid reports that neither the Certified True Copy nor the full text of the judgment had been released at the time of widespread reactions.
They warned that such circumstances raise “important concerns regarding procedural fairness, institutional responsibility, and adherence to the principles of due process that underpin constitutional democracy.”
The organisations anchored their concerns on constitutional provisions, citing Section 36(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which guarantees fair hearing. They argued that fair hearing extends beyond courtroom proceedings to include transparency in judicial decisions and access to information necessary for appeal.

The Jigawa State Executive Council has approved the establishment of a State Steering Committee to coordinate the implementation of the Polling Units Development Fund disbursement across the state
The Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Sagiru Musa Ahmed, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the Government House.
He said the initiative is aimed at strengthening grassroots governance, encouraging community participation, and ensuring that development projects reach ward and polling unit levels effectively.
According to him, the committee will provide policy direction, supervision, monitoring, and coordination for the successful implementation of the Polling Units Ward Development Committee framework statewide.
Ahmed explained that the committee will be chaired by the Commissioner for Local Government and Community Development, with membership drawn from key government institutions, including the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Information, and Digital Economy, as well as other stakeholders.
