The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions in Nigerian universities has resumed negotiations with the Federal Government following the suspension of its indefinite strike.

JAC comprises the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU).
The unions commenced an indefinite strike on April 30 over delays in the renegotiation of agreements with the Federal Government.
The strike was, however, suspended on May 11 after appeals and assurances from the Federal Government Expanded Tertiary Institutions Renegotiation Committee.

The unions’ demands include the conclusion of the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, improved welfare conditions, payment of allowances and rejection of unilateral salary offers.

SSANU National President, Mr Mohammed Ibrahim, confirmed the resumption of talks in a telephone interview with NAN on Monday in Abuja.<

ON FOREIGN NEWS

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa ruled out resigning on Monday and said he would mount a legal challenge to impeachment proceedings against him in court over a $4 million cash-heist scandal.

The case resurfaced last week after a court decision overturned the rejection of a 2022 parliamentary report which concluded that Ramaphosa “may have committed” serious violations and misconduct.
The 73-year-old head of state was accused of hiding from police and tax authorities a 2020 break-in and theft of large sums of foreign currency allegedly stashed in furniture at his luxury Phala Phala farmhouse in the northern Limpopo province.
In a televised speech, Ramaphosa said there was nothing in Friday’s Constitutional Court ruling that justified impeachment or his removal from office.

Mathys Tel was the hero and villain as Tottenham drew 1-1 at home against Leeds on Monday — a result that leaves their Premier League future hanging in the balance.

The Frenchman broke the deadlock early in the second half to ease the tension at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but then gave away a penalty with a wild attempted clearance. Spurs are now two points clear of West Ham, who were denied a stoppage-time equaliser by VAR on Sunday in a 1-0 defeat by Arsenal — a potentially season-defining decision at both ends of the table.
That result at the London Stadium ensured that Leeds and Nottingham Forest were safe from relegation while Wolves and Burnley have already been relegated.
