THE DETAILS

Panic has gripped the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State, following the discovery of the body of a 23-year-old student, Favour Olaniyi, in a bush near his off-campus residence.
Olaniyi, a student of the Department of Surveying and Geo-informatics, was found dead on Saturday along the North Gate area of the university.
An empty bottle of a suspected toxic herbicide was reportedly recovered at the scene, raising concerns that the incident may be linked to suicide. The university’s Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Adegbenro Adebanjo, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, describing it as tragic and confirming that the student’s parents had been notified. He said university security promptly alerted the police after the discovery, while medical personnel and security operatives assisted in evacuating the body to the mortuary.
Students are encouraged to take advantage of the availability of such counselling and guidance when they are faced with any issues on and off campus,” he added. The Ondo State Police Command confirmed that an investigation has commenced into the incident. Police spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said detectives found no visible signs of violence on the body at the scene.
“The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and further examination while investigation is ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident,” he said.

Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged vandalisation and theft of electrical installations at the General Hospital, Igbotako, in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State. The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed this in a statement issued in Akure on Sunday.
According to him, on May 6, 2026, a concerned resident reported that a suspect, identified as Promise Godspower, had unlawfully gained access to the hospital premises, allegedly vandalised electrical installations, and stolen cables.
“Acting swiftly on credible intelligence and investigative leads, operatives of the Command tracked and arrested the prime suspect, identified as Promise Godspower. During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to the offence,” Jimoh said. He added that a security personnel attached to the hospital, Pogbara Sigalo, was also taken into custody for questioning over alleged negligence of duty and possible complicity in the incident. Jimoh further stated that the stolen electrical cables were recovered from the suspect, while investigations are ongoing.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Adebowale Lawal, condemned both the alleged act of vandalism and the reported security lapse, describing negligence of duty as a serious threat to public safety and the protection of government property.

Seven aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have stepped down from the 2027 Kano Central Senatorial District race and endorsed former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, as the party’s consensus candidate. One of the aspirants, Usman Bala Mohammed, explained that the decision was taken both individually and collectively in the interest of the APC’s success at the national, state, and constituency levels
Another aspirant, Sha’aban Sharada, dismissed any suggestion of coercion, describing the decision as voluntary and carefully considered. The development is being viewed as a significant boost for APC unity in Kano ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Defence Headquarters has denied reports alleging that civilians were killed during recent airstrikes carried out by the Nigerian military in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, insisting that the operation targeted only armed bandits. The military said the Nigerian Army UAV Command subsequently carried out multiple air interdiction strikes between 11:59 p.m. on May 10 and 6 a.m. across suspected bandit hideouts in Katerma, Bokko, Kusasu and Kuduru villages.
Onoja stated that local intelligence sources confirmed that the aerial bombardments were “precise on target” in Kusasu, Katerma and Bokko villages. He disclosed that about 70 bandits were killed in Kusasu alone, while surviving fighters were seen evacuating the bodies of their colleagues for burial. Reacting to reports claiming civilians were killed during the operation, Onoja maintained that the strikes were based on credible and actionable intelligence confirming the presence of terrorists at the targeted locations.
He further stated that residents of communities within the affected areas had relocated to Sarkin Pawa before the operation commenced. Onoja urged the media and members of the public to avoid spreading unverified reports capable of undermining military operations and troop morale.

US President Donald Trump has said in an interview aired Sunday that it would only take two weeks to hit “every single target” in Iran, adding that the Islamic republic was “militarily defeated.” Attkisson, which was recorded last week, he also called NATO a “paper tiger” and accused Washington’s allies of failing to assist in the campaign against Tehran.
The comments come as Iran is reported to have responded to the latest US proposal on ending a conflict that began on February 28 with US and Israeli strikes on Iran. They’re militarily defeated. In their own minds, maybe they don’t know that. But I think they do,” Trump said in the interview, before adding: “That doesn’t mean they’re done.”
He suggested the US military could “go in for two more weeks and do every single target. We have certain targets that we wanted, and we’ve done probably 70 percent of them, but we have other targets that we could conceivably hit.” “But even if we didn’t do that, you know, that would just be final touches,” Trump said. On NATO, he said the alliance “has proven to be a paper tiger. They weren’t there to help.”

Arsenal moved closer to the Premier League title in controversial fashion as a hugely contentious decision to disallow Callum Wilson’s stoppage-time goal handed the leaders a vital 1-0 win against West Ham on Sunday.
Mikel Arteta’s side struggled to break down West Ham in a tense derby at the London Stadium before Leandro Trossard struck with a deflected effort seven minutes from full-time. But Arsenal’s title rivals Manchester City will be furious that West Ham were denied a last-gasp equaliser for Pablo’s foul on Gunners keeper David Raya, whose fumble was fired home by Wilson. Pablo had his arm across Raya’s chest in the incident but the contact was minimal, with West Ham also claiming fouls by Declan Rice and Trossard at the same moment.
In what could be the defining image of the title race, referee Chris Kavanagh and the VAR officials took an age to disallow the goal, with the verdict eventually sparking outraged jeers from West Ham fans, while Arteta clenched his fists in relief.
