THE DETAILS
The 8 Division Nigerian Army has graduated 27 newly trained drone pilots as part of efforts to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen intelligence gathering in ongoing security operations in the North West.
In a statement posted on its X handle on Friday, the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division / Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, said the graduation ceremony, held at the Division Training School, Giginya Military Cantonment in Kaduna, marked a key milestone in the Army’s drive to integrate modern technology into its operations under Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
The General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2, Joint Task Force (North West), Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, said the initiative reflects the Army’s growing reliance on technology-driven warfare and improved force protection.
President Bola Tinubu on Friday declared insecurity and poverty as national emergencies, saying both crises pose serious threats to jobs, productivity and Nigeria’s overall stability.
The President made the declaration during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration held at Eagle Square, Abuja, where he addressed thousands of workers and labour leaders.
Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, Tinubu said there could be no meaningful employment or economic growth in an atmosphere of fear and hardship.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has assured residents of the Federal Capital Territory of the continued deployment of its active workforce to ensure the protection of lives, property, and critical infrastructure across the territory.
The Commandant of the FCT Command of the NSCDC, Olusola Odumosu, gave the assurance on Friday at the command headquarters in Abuja while speaking on the occasion of the Workers’ Day celebration.
He also stressed the importance of Private Guard Companies in supporting internal security, noting that ongoing training and strict monitoring would ensure improved service delivery across the sector.
FOREIGN NEWS
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has argued that the clock has paused on a deadline for the Trump administration to seek approval from Congress for the US-Israeli war with Iran.
Hegseth was responding to questions from members of the Senate, or upper chamber, on Thursday.
Friday is the 60th day since Trump formally notified Congress of the strikes against Iran on 2 March. US law requires a president to "terminate any use of United States Armed Forces" within 60 days of such a notification - unless Congress allows a continuation.
A senior administration official said hostilities with Iran had "terminated", emphasising that a ceasefire had been in effect since early April.
Despite the ceasefire, the two sides have not yet reached a longer-term deal via talks, though efforts to end the stalemate appear to be underway.

Benfica coach, Jose Mourinho, said on Friday that there has been no contact between him and Real Madrid, despite speculation that the Spanish giants could turn to him this summer.
The veteran Portuguese coach, who led Los Blancos from 2010 to 2013 in a heated rivalry with Pep Guardiola’s Barca, is reported to be on Madrid’s shortlist for a new coach.
Current Madrid boss Alvaro Arbeloa seems set to be replaced, with the team heading for a second consecutive season without a major trophy.
