A fresh xenophobic violence in South Africa has claimed the lives of two Nigerians, triggering fear and panic within the diaspora community and prompting urgent diplomatic engagement by the Federal Government.
The development comes as Nigerians living in South Africa demanded protection by the Federal Government, saying that protecting Nigerians abroad is both a constitutional and moral obligation of the government.
The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg confirmed that Amaramiro Emmanuel and Ekpenyong Andrew were killed in separate incidents linked to rising anti-foreigner tensions.
The Consul-General, Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, disclosed in a statement on Monday that Emmanuel died from injuries allegedly sustained after being beaten by personnel of the South African National Defence Force on April 20.
The Federal Government on Tuesday said it is intensifying efforts to bridge the gap for out-of-school children through coordinated reforms and targeted interventions across the country.
The Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa, stated this on Tuesday at the ongoing 2026 Basic Education in Nigeria Boot Camp Summit, a three-day event holding in Jos, the Plateau State capital, from April 28–30. The summit is themed “Enhancing Access to Inclusive Quality Education and Bridging the Gap for Out of School Children in Nigeria”.
“This gathering comes at a defining moment in our nation’s education journey, as we collectively seek sustainable solutions to ensure that every Nigerian child has access to quality basic education,” Alausa said.
He acknowledged that “despite ongoing reforms, Nigeria still faces the challenge of a significant number of out-of-school children and poor-quality education,” stressing that “this reality demands urgent, coordinated, and innovative responses from government, development partners, civil society, and the private sector.”
The management of Obafemi Awolowo University has directed students to proceed on a three-week mid-semester break following protests over transportation and welfare concerns on campus.
In a Tuesday statement issued by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the university said the decision was approved by the Senate after demonstrations by students escalated.
“The Senate of the University has approved that the students proceed on a mid-semester break for a period of three weeks, with immediate effect,” the statement read.
The management said the action became necessary after protests over a newly introduced transportation system led to the obstruction of major access roads and harassment of road users.

Authorities in Uganda have detained 231 foreign nationals, including 62 Nigerians, following a coordinated operation targeting illegal migration and suspected criminal activities.
The arrests were carried out during two intelligence-led raids on April 27, 2026, in Adjumani and the Bukoto–Ntinda area of Kampala. Officials said the operation was prompted by credible information from members of the public.
Speaking on the development, Ministry of Internal Affairs spokesperson Simon Peter Mundeyi disclosed that the Nigerian suspects were allegedly operating a church and other businesses without valid work permits.
