Community leaders in Kwara State have called for the direct allocation of security votes to local governments to strengthen grassroots responses to rising insecurity.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Sunday amid recent attacks in parts of Kwara North and Kwara South, members of the Offa Security Committee, led by retired Air Vice Marshal Abdul-Ganiyu Olabisi, said the situation had placed increasing pressure on local communities to organise self-defence and support security agencies.
Olabisi stressed that the government must match calls for community participation with financial backing, noting that the direct allocation of security votes to local governments would improve responses to threats.
The Ogun State Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading a viral video circulating on social media that allegedly shows armed bandits operating in a forest in Ogun State, assuring residents that there is no such security threat in the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, he clarified that the video in question did not originate from Ogun State or anywhere in Nigeria, describing it as “recycled footage deliberately misrepresented to incite fear and panic among the public.”
The State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, strongly condemned the spread of unverified content, warning that it could undermine public confidence and create unnecessary alarm.
He reassured residents that the Command remains proactive in safeguarding lives and property through intelligence-driven policing, strategic deployments, and sustained surveillance operations.
After many years of neglect, the Owena Dam in Igbara-Oke, Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State is finally bouncing back to life, bringing renewed hope of potable water supply to residents.
The dam, which had suffered prolonged abandonment due to funding challenges, legal disputes and lack of political will, is now being revived through renewed commitment by the state government and support from development partners.
Officials said the ongoing rehabilitation and reticulation project will ensure that pipe-borne water is delivered to households across affected communities in Ondo Central Senatorial District.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Sanitation and Hygiene, Mr Sunday Akinwalere, noted that previous setbacks had stalled progress but expressed optimism that the project would now be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
He added that the project, once completed, would serve thousands of households and significantly improve access to clean water, marking a major turnaround for the long-abandoned facility.
